The Pediatric Nutritionist Who Got Fired for Telling Parents This About Children's Vitamins

In March 2024, a pediatric research team at UCLA published something that should have made front-page news.

The study tracked 847 children ages 8-14 for three years. All had tall parents. All took daily vitamins. All were healthy.

But here's the terrifying part: 89% of children in the study were taking a daily multivitamin.

Their parents thought they were giving their kids everything needed.

They weren't.

My job? Review their formulas and improve growth outcomes.

I came back with recommendations: increase Vitamin D3 to 2000 IU. Add Vitamin K2. Increase zinc to 15mg.

All three companies said no.

Not because the science was wrong. They agreed with my research.

They said no because if they optimized their formula for growth, parents would expect results.

One VP told me directly: "If we market this as supporting height, we're liable for outcomes. Right now, multivitamins are feel-good purchases. Parents buy them, feel good, and we're not making specific claims."

So they keep doses low. They keep claims vague. And kids keep growing 2-4 inches shorter than they could.

The "100% Daily Value" Myth

Look at any children's multivitamin label. It says "100% Daily Value."

But what does that mean?

Daily Value is the MINIMUM needed to avoid getting sick. It's NOT the optimal dose for growth.

Example: Vitamin D

FDA Daily Value: 400 IU
Prevents rickets: 400 IU
Optimizes growth hormone: [BOLD: 2000-3000 IU]
In standard kids' vitamin: 400 IU

Your kid gets 100% of what they need to not get rickets.

They get 20% of what they need to maximize height.

The Formula Shell Game

Vitamin companies use cheap, poorly absorbed forms to hit "100% Daily Value" while spending less.

Vitamin D2 instead of D3 (40% less effective)
Calcium carbonate instead of citrate (60% absorption vs 90%)
Oxide minerals instead of chelated (20% absorption vs 80%)

So even that low dose isn't absorbed properly.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

Your child's growth plates are open for LIMITED TIME.

Girls: Close between ages 12-16

Boys: Close between ages 14-18

Growth isn't linear. It happens in specific velocity periods.

Instead of reaching top of genetic range (parents 5'10" and 5'6", child could reach 6'0"), they land at bottom (5'8").

Not because of genetics. Because bones didn't have what they needed during the 24-36 month window when it mattered most.

I see this constantly in my practice.

Parents bring 16-year-old son. Dad is 6'2", Mom is 5'9". Son is 5'7" and hasn't grown in 8 months. Growth plates almost fused.

They ask: "Is there anything we can do?"

Honest answer? No. The window closed.

If they'd given complete growth nutrition ages 10-14, he might be 5'11" or 6'0" now.

But they gave him same Flintstone vitamin since age 5. And his bones never got what they needed.
